Attorney and KPMG Professor within Accounting at the Fisher College of Accounting, University associated with Florida Stephen Kwaku Asare (Kwaku Azar) has contended that it is untrue that most Ghanaians do not pay taxes.
Instead, he insists, most Ghanaians who should be paying fees, do not pay with some savoring exemptions. He contended that will in increasing the number of taxes payers, Government must go after the wealthy who tend not to pay taxes rather than the bad who have little to absolutely nothing.
Kwaku Azar then shows that rather than the E-Levy which shows up easier collect, Government should pursue alternatives.
“When considering increasing the tax package, we should stop running kiti kiti after most Ghanafuo, who have little or no income, plus bamba with the big period earners who avoid plus evade taxes.
That means pursuing gold exporters who misprice their exports, life style review and tax surcharges of these whose wealth cannot be described by their declared sources of earnings, ending subsidies of lucrative companies in the form of tax exemptions, ensuring that our SOEs are usually run by the best planks and CEOs so that they make profits, etc, ” he or she explained.
On the E-Levy he or she wrote: “It is true the fact that MOMO highway is more lit. But that is not a good reason to become looking for our lost taxes revenues there. We must search for our lost tax profits where we lost all of them — the tax prevention, evasion and exemption roads. ”
Kwaku Azar’s sights are supported by a few experts who are against the E-Levy which will rake in less that will GHC 7 billion yearly while undermining the country’s digitalisation agenda. Instead Authorities has been urged to look at areas of the economy it has lengthy ignored.
