Bongo in the Upper East Area recorded 49 mental health problems as a result of excessive intake associated with alcohol. This is according to the Region Mental Health Focal Individual, Prince Kofi Yeboah who else spoke Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM in an interview. The problems according to the Health Focal individual ranged from hallucinations (visual, oral and tactile hallucinations), sweat to speech incoherence which includes of the patients developing temperature and high blood pressure. “The yr 2020 alone, we had regarding 49 people developing psychological illness as a result of alcohol consumption in Bongo District. A number of them came with disorientation, others included hallucinations; visual, auditory plus tactile. Visual hallucination, they start to see things that are not genuine. Auditory hallucination, they begin to listen to voices. Some of them will tell you ‘look at the people, they are keeping machine guns, they want to police arrest me’. You look around and also you don’t see anybody. Many of them would tell you ‘I feel God, I can do this, I could do that. I am the leader of Ghana’. Some of them include very high temperatures, others higher BP and some of them include speech incoherence. They speak and you also can’t make meaning from it. There are instances where many of them become very aggressive plus violent. They become therefore violent that it becomes tough for their families to include them at home, ” this individual stated. Prince Kofi Yeboah disclosed that shockingly, the majority of the cases recorded were over the last quarter of the year exactly where alcohol consumption had skyrocketed. “The last quarter of every calendar year is the time when we obtain a lot of people developing psychological health disorders as a result of alcoholic beverages intake or psychoactive product use and it is because of the actions during the festive seasons also because people just finished enjoying, they have a lot of money to spend, ” he explained.
