An insurance policy analyst with the Integrated Interpersonal Development Centre (ISODEC), Doctor Steve Manteaw has mentioned that the resistance to taxes launched by the Government of Ghana is a result of the insensitivity from the government to the plight from the people. According to him, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s costly travels did not portray the government that is serious about coping with the pressures on the budget. To him, this is actually the more reason why there’s already been stiff opposition to the e-levy the government intends to bring in. Making this known in a remark shared on Facebook, Sam Manteaw said “Precisely due to the difficult times, which you fault COVID for, our federal government must show leadership simply by reducing waste, curbing problem, and avoiding profligacy. This particular expensive leasing of aeroplanes for presidential travels is definitely an insult to our collective mind. It smacks of recklessness”. Adding that “On problem of COVID, we should have demostrated more prudence in government’s expenditure. Those expensive president travels did not portray the government that is serious about coping with pressures on its spending budget. You see, insensitivity to the predicament of the people begets resistance from taxes”. To him, when the waste was cut out from the system, the country wouldn’t exist fighting over the introduction of recent taxes. “You’re right, whenever we can cut just a fraction of the waste materials and curb corruption, we may not need these humongous fees being shoved down our own throats. ”A cross-section associated with Ghanaians and the Minority within Parliament are fighting the federal government over the introduction of the e-levy which is expected to charge the tax of 1. 75% upon electronic transactions in the country.
