‘Bamba with the big boys’ – Kwaku Azar gives government alternatives to e-levy

Attorney and KPMG Professor within Accounting at the Fisher College of Accounting, University associated with Florida Stephen Kwaku Asare widely known as Kwaku Azar has argued that it is false that most Ghanaians do not spend taxes.

Rather, he demands, most Ghanaians who ought to be paying taxes, do not spend with some enjoying exemptions. This individual contended that in growing the number of taxpayers, Government should pursue the wealthy exactly who do not pay taxes as opposed to the poor who have little in order to nothing.

Kwaku Azar after that suggests that rather than the E-Levy which usually appears easier to collect, Govt must pursue alternatives.

“When it comes to increasing the taxes envelope, we should stop operating kiti kiti after many Ghanafuo, who have little or no revenue, and bamba with the large time earners who prevent and evade taxes.

This means going after gold exporters who have misprice their exports, way of living audit and tax surcharges of those whose wealth can not be explained by their declared causes of income, ending subsidies associated with profitable companies in the form of taxes exemptions, ensuring that our SOEs are run by the greatest boards and CEOs so they are making profits, etc, ” he explained.

On the E-Levy he wrote: “It holds true that the MOMO highway much more lighted. But that is not reasonable to be looking for our dropped tax revenues there. We have to look for our lost taxes revenues where we dropped them — the taxes avoidance, evasion and permission highways. ”

Kwaku Azar’s views are supported simply by some experts who are contrary to the E-Levy which will rake in lower than GHC 7 billion yearly while undermining the country’s digitalization agenda. Instead, Federal government has been urged to look at areas of the economy it has lengthy ignored.
